Beer, the blues and bagpipes. If that's not enough to get your head pounding, you're made of pretty strong stuff, and Hawaii Public Radio wants you -- at Saturday's International Beer Tasting. Sly-guy headlines
at beer tastingThis 10th-annual brew-slinging fund-raiser for HPR features a collection of local microbrews as well as concoctions from Mexico, China, Japan, New Zealand, Germany, Holland and Czechoslovakia.
Entertainment will feature A Stone's Throw, the rhythm and blues band formed by Jerry Martini, former member of Sly and the Family Stone. (Remember the line from 'Dance To The Music," "Cynthia and Jerry got a message that's sayin', 'All the squares, go home!'"?)
Before that, though, the Celtic Pipes and Drums, a classic kilted bagpipe and drum ensemble, will kick things off. In honor of this grand opening, the tasting will feature Guinness Pub Draught, Harp Lager, Bass Ale and Murphy's Irish Stout and Irish Amber.
Other special brews worth a sip: Doc Otis and Tequiza Extra from Anheuser-Busch; and Portland, Deshutes and Anchor brews from Paradise Beverages.
Local microbrews to be featured: Alii Brewery, Brew Moon, Gordon Biersch, Kona Brewery, Oahu Homebrew, Sam Choy's Big Aloha Brewery, Whaler's Brewpub and Wolaver's organic brews on Kauai.
And since you shouldn't drink on an empty stomach, snack on ribs from Brew Moon or Sam Choy's Breakfast, Lunch and Crab, quesadillas from Compadres, oysters from Shipley's or garlic fries from Gordon Biersch.
The tasting runs from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Diamond Head end of Auahi Street near Ward Centre. Tickets are $25 in advance, $30 at the door; must be 21 to attend. Buy tickets at Brew Moon at Ward Centre, the Liquor Collection at Ward Warehouse or Oahu Homebrew at 856 Ilaniwai St. Or call 955-8821.
