Nothing’s timid
about Timmy

TIMMY'S Gym owner Timmy Leong, 73, is still going strong -- particularly in the joke department. Timmy was a puny teen, built himself up with weights and later opened a gym. He won Mug shotmost of Hawaii's body beautiful titles and came in seventh in the '53 Mr. America contest and fourth in the '58 Mr. USA competition. Last Saturday, he took Suki O'Hara to Neiman Marcus to chat with salesman Norman Kato, a former part-time instructor at Timmy's. Suki was an instructor for 12 years with Timmy. She was visiting from Oregon. Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura worked out at Timmy's when he wrestled here. Arnold Schwarzenegger pumped iron at Timmy's on isle visits. Wrestler Lord Blears was a regular. His wife, Lee Blears, was an instructor. With the gym approaching its 48th year, Timmy is semi-retired and now shares its ownership with Christine and Tim Glass ...

Stevedore firm turns 100

MCCABE, Hamilton & Renny celebrated its 100th anniversary Thursday night at the Halekulani and President Tim Guard credited the "great and loyal customers, employees and friends who got us here." He praised his stevedores: "The basic longshoreman, that's where the rubber meets the road. The guy working on the docks is where the effort to meet or exceed our customers' expectations begins or ends." Tim should know. His dad, the late Jack Guard, former company president, put him to work as a stevedore. "He wanted to make sure I learned the business from the ground up." Stevedores Jose Jandoc and Gospel Manatad each have more than 40 years with the firm. Matson CEO Brad Mulholland sent Tim a container ship model, presented by Matson's Gary North. Maunalua played music ...

"RENT" Producer Kevin McCollum strolled down memory lane last week at Diamond Head Theatre, which was Honolulu Community Theatre when he performed there. His mom, Sue McCollum, was a theater board member and also performed. Artistic Director John Rampage gave Kevin a tour of the "Phantom" set, which was of special interest to Kevin since he produced the show on the Mainland. Costume chief Karen Metcalf Wolfe found Sue's costumes from the 1975 production of "The Music man." Besides Sue, youngsters Karen and Kevin were also in the musical. The second national tour's production of "Rent" plays Aug. 2-13 at Blaisdell Concert Hall. DHT's "Phantom" closes tomorrow. It's a winner ...

WILLETTE Ho, of Wally Ho's Garage and Grill, marked her birthday Monday with Jane Stubenberg, Lyn Brown and Mariposa bartender Clyde Takahashi. Willette's dad, Wally, was a star guard in Iolani football, Class of '50 ... Russell Siu, chef-owner of 3660 on the Rise and Kakaako Kitchen, and Malia Ho revealed they were wed in March ... Ed Wary, owner of Auntie Pasto's and Dixie Grill, married Tina Reyna at Ihilani last weekend. Their baby, Madeline Rose, attended ...

That Wynning smile

COSMETIC dentist Wynn Okuda was named Humanitarian of the Year at the recent American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry's meeting in San Francisco. He was honored for his Give Back a Smile Program, which provides free consultation and cosmetic dental surgery to survivors of domestic violence. Okuda was also named V.P. of the group ... Former Miss Hawaii and Miss America Carolyn Sapp hosts "keep the Faith" Countdown for Praise TV on PAX out of L.A. It's an inspirational music countdown show ...
