Hip-hop down to Agnès b.
By Nadine Kam
Star-BulletinYOU can't lead a homebody to the clubs, but you can bring the house closer to where they live. For instance, the mall.
Ala Moana Shopping Center French boutique Agnès b. will be hosting the free local DJ series "DJ 2000+1" four consecutive Saturdays beginning this weekend, when Rod Agai, a k a Maze, spins hip-hop mixes between 5 and 7 p.m.
DJ events will take place in Agnès b. stores around the world at the designer's command. Hawaii will be the first to stage the series, which will allow shoppers to browse to a dance beat.
Store manager Lan Chung said, "Agnès promotes and supports artists. She's very versatile herself. She not only designs, but she produces records, and all the photographs that hang in the stores are hers.
"For a fashion designer, Agnès b. is remarkably "anti-fashion," having described herself in interviews as "hating the spectacle of fashion."
Taking her cue from her stylish compatriots, Agnès b.'s boutiques offer timeless, wearable classics such as blazers, sweaters and T-shirts that are unfussy, yet perennially hip, suitable for the young or simply young-at-heart.
The clothes fold into lives as easily as art and music.
"They're all a part of today's lifestyle," Chung said.
Other DJ performances are:
June 17 -- Scottie Soul spins progressive house 3 to 5 p.m.June 24 -- G Spot performs Chicago-style house, 2 to 4 p.m.
July 1 -- Euphorik serves up jungle rhythms 3 to 5 p.m.
"It's just for fun, to draw in people," said Chung. "A lot of stores play elevator music, and maybe that's their style, but people are not into that."
