Field set for annual
Manoa Cup

Ryan Koshi and Blaine Kimura shot 3-under-par 68's to share medalist honors in the Manoa Cup qualifying round yesterday at the Oahu Country Club.

Defending champion Shane Hoshino, who didn't need to qualify, is top seeded in the upper bracket, while Koshi was to be seeded No. 2 in the lower bracket as 32 first-round matches were scheduled for this morning. The second round is scheduled for this afternoon.

Also qualifying yesterday were former Manoa Cup champions Brandan Kop, Damien Victorino, Guy Yamamoto, Dick Sieradzki and Jack Omuro.

Hoshino defeated Kop, 4 and 3, in last year's 36-hole final, spoiling Kop's bid to win his fifth Manoa Cup title.

The 64-player field will be reduced to 16 tomorrow, with the quarterfinals set for Thursday. The 36-hole semifinals will be held Friday with the 36-hole final scheduled for Saturday.

It marks the first time that the Manoa Cup, emblematic of the Hawaii State Amateur Championship, will not be played Sunday.

HIBT taking entries

Registration is still open for the Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament on the Big Island, which will run from July 31-Aug. 4.

The world's most prestigious billfishing tournament, in Kailua-Kona, expects to field 50 boats.

The tournament is open to any team representing a club, city, state or country.

Volunteers also are needed for tournament activities.

The Honolulu Marathon has opened a newly expanded Web site, located at http://www.honolulumarathon.org.

Runners from all over the world can now enter the marathon via the site. The site also functions as the official archive for the Honolulu Marathon.

Links to sponsors, affiliates, hotels and traveling companies will also be available on the site.
