Pearl City gateways
Star-BulletinConstruction on Aiea and Pearl City gateway landmarks proposed by a vision team could begin in fall 2001.
The Aiea/Pearl City community vision team is about to sign off on a consultant's plans for the artistic markers. AM Partners did the designs.
Team member Bonnie Arakawa told the group, meeting at Waiau District Park, a letter of acceptance is being prepared for her signature as Aiea representative and that of Dr. Kenji Uejo, Pearl City representative.
It will notify the city Department of Design and Construction the vision team approves the plans, and this will enable money to be released to eventually begin construction.
Only vision team members attended last night's meeting. No other citizens showed up to offer comments on proposed landmarks.
Preferred sites for both projects are along Moanalua Road near the respective Ewa-bound exits from H-1 freeway.
The proposed Aiea site is the makai side of Moanalua just past Kaimakani Street.
Portions of the Pearl City site would be on both sides of Moanalua east of Hoomalu Street.
The Aiea artwork is expected to cost $552,000, the Pearl City marker $535,000.
A water-like feature, with the appearance of a wet sheen, is proposed as a platform for sculpture at both locations. Night lighting also is planned.
Landscaping will include gold tree plantings in Aiea.
Monkeypod trees, royal palms and colorful shrubs are favored in Pearl City.
