off to OmahaA workmanlike pitching performance by former Punahou star Justin Wayne kept Stanford alive Saturday in its best-of-three NCAA Super Regional. Yesterday, Brian Sager finished the job.
Sager (6-1) allowed five hits in seven innings and Edmund Muth homered as host Stanford advanced to the College World Series with a 5-3 victory over Nebraska.
Sager allowed just one earned run while striking out three and walking four in his longest outing of the season.
Jeff Bruksch got the final six outs for his 12th save.
Eric Bruntlett had four hits as Stanford (47-15) reached the CWS for the third time in four years and 12th time overall.
Jamal Strong had two hits for Nebraska (51-17).
In other super regionals decided yesterday, San Jose State (41-22), making its first NCAA tournament appearance since 1971, secured its first College World Series berth with a 3-2 nod over Houston; Louisiana-Lafayette (47-18) earned its first CWS trip by beating South Carolina, 3-2, and Florida State (51-17) knocked off defending national champion Miami, 6-1.
On Saturday, Clemson, Louis-iana State, Southern California and Texas advanced.
San Jose St. 3, Houston 2: At Houston, Tim Adinolfi and Chris Key combined on a six-hitter and Rob Douglass and John Fagan homered for San Jose State of the Western Athletic Conference.
Adinolfi (8-3) struck out four, walked three and allowed only four runners to reach second base in eight innings of work.
Fagan homered off Duncan McAdoo (7-3) to give the Spartans a 3-1 lead in the sixth.
