Scholarships to
Nakamura, Yamada

Natalie Nakamura of Hilo, a student at the University of San Francisco, and Evan Yamada, a senior at Mililani High School, are the first recipients of the Golf Media Association of Hawaii scholarships.

Nakamura received the Monte Ito Memorial Scholarship and Yamada won the Bill Gee Memorial Scholarship.

Both scholarships are in the amount of $1,500.

Nakamura, a junior, is a communications major and a member of the USF women's golf team where she earned a partial golf scholarship.

Yamada has lettered the past three season for the Trojans and was captain of the boys' golf team this year.

Crazy Hats at Speedway

It will be "Crazy Hat Nite" at Hawaii Motor Speedway tomorrow, with a dollar off admission for every fan who wears a crazy hat to the races.

Featured is the last qualifier race before the Summer Sizzle World Championships on June 10.

One fan will win a new "Winter Heat" season pass in the crazy hat contest.

Gates open at 5 p.m., and racing starts at 7 p.m.

Junior beach volleyball

The AAU National Beach Volleyball Tour kicks off its 2000 season tomorrow and Sunday at Queen's Beach with a two-person tournament.

The tournament is open to boys and girls, ages 10-18. Entry is $10 per team, and registration begins at 8 a.m. tomorrow.

BYUH's Nordwall honored

BYU-Hawaii's Helena Nordwall has been named to the GTE Academic All-District VIII Team.

The BYUH junior recently helped the Seasiders' women's tennis team to its second straight NCAA II national title.

She finished the year ranked 10th in the nation in singles and fourth in doubles.

Nordwall, an international business major, is scheduled to graduate later this month, and will forgo her final year of eligibility.

A student-athlete must have a GPA of 3.2 to be eligible for the honor.

Big splash for Aussies

Australian competitors felt right at home in the Waimea Open Ocean Challenge, with 12 athletes earning top-three rankings in the Wednesday meet.

The Waimea event is a warm-up for the Sunday-Monday Hawaiian International Ocean Challenge, which crowns the best lifeguard team in the world.

Nine teams will compete in the HIOC, including Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Canada, Hawaii and three other US teams.

UH sailors 11th in finale

The University of Hawaii Wahine sailing team completed the spring season with an 11th-place finish at the ICYRA Women's Dinghy Nationals in Maryland.

Second-ranked Dartmouth won the 12-race regatta, which featured 18 teams.

Wahine sailor Molly O'Bryan was named All-ICYRA honorable mention.

The regatta was the Wahine's lone national appearance of the season.

Box car fun for everyone

Box car racing is open to the public tomorrow night at the Pearl City Box Car Track.

Registration begins at 5 p.m., and the racing starts at 7 p.m. There will be an awards ceremony at 9 p.m.

Admission is $10 for each driver, and $5 for each additional family member.

UH summer sports camps

There are still openings for youngsters interested in attending the Rainbow Summer baseball Camp or the UH Rainbow Wahine Basketball Camp.
