Gathering celebrates
ecology with info,
entertainment

OAHU is nicknamed the Gathering Place, so it's about time we have an "Oahu Gathering."

IKOH, the Hawaiian Airlines Oahu Oceanfest and Youth for Environmental Service are staging the event 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday at Ala Moana Beach Park's McCoy Pavilion. Admission is free. Featured will be music and visual art presented in the the context of a eco-friendly theme.

Entertainment will be provided by Pure Heart, Rolando Sanchez, Sundrum 2000, THC, Capoeira by Kids, Third Degree, Tahiti Toa, Da Braddahs, and many more performers, while practitioners of Hawaiian, Asian and Western healing practices will share information about their services and techniques.

Community and environmental organizations such as Time Capsule Hawaii 2025, Pacific Gateway Center (for entrepreneurial empowerment), Dolphin Encounters and Diversified Organic Agriculture, also will be on hand.

'Rent' tickets go on sale

Tickets for the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning drama "Rent" will go on sale 9 a.m. tomorrow at the Blaisdell box office and Ticket Plus outlets.

The musical will be staged at the Blaisdell Concert Hall Aug. 2 through 13 with showtimes 8 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays; 2 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays and 7 p.m. Sunday, with an additional matinee on Thursday, Aug. 3, when all tickets will be $35. Tickets otherwise are priced between $22.50 and $65.

"Rent," inspired by Puccini's "La Boheme," celebrates a community of artists as they struggle with life's hardships.

The show premiered off-Broadway on Feb. 13, 1996, to rave reviews. It received its Pulitzer Award for Best Drama and Tony Award for Best Musical that year, and continues to play to standing-room audiences on Broadway.

Erin Brockovich guests on Hawaii cable show

The real Erin Brockovich, the California legal investigator played by Julia Roberts in the recent feature film "Erin Brockovich," will be interviewed on "Lawyer's Live" at 6:30 p.m. Monday on cable channel 54. Viewers are invited to call in questions for Brockovich.

"Lawyers Live" is a weekly program hosted by Honolulu attorney Jean Malia Orque-Lee that presents legal information and showcases members of the legal community.

Folk arts series continues

The Living Masters Concert Series continues 2 p.m. Sunday with Cheryl Nakasone and her group of Okinawan dancers performing with apprentice artist Yuki Shiroma.

The free performance takes place on the 'Iolani Palace lawn. Beach chairs or mats are welcome.

The series features participants in the Folk Arts Program of the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts. Also scheduled this summer at 'Iolani are:

Bullet July 2 -- Hula master Nona Beamer, apprentice Maile Loo and Halau Hula 'O Kaho'oilina Aloha.

Bullet Aug. 6 -- Rev. Mastoshi Shamato with ensemble and apprentice Darin Miyashiro in a performance of gagaku, an ancient form of Japanese court music.

Bullet Sept. 3 -- Master Richard Ho'opi'i and apprentice "Bobo" Miles Jr. performing Hawaiian-style falsetto singing.

WWII family tales sought

Hero Productions is collecting stories of everyday heroes of World War II -- the men and women who kept their families intact despite the hardships of war -- for a television series highlighting the relationship between WWII military personnel and loved ones back home.

The company is based in Oklahoma and aims to present a modern generation with examples of character and commitment.
