UH signs softball trio

The University of Hawaii softball team has signed three freshmen recruits - third baseman-catcher April Crowell of Roosevelt High School, outfielder Marie Jackson of Mililani High and third-baseman-shortstop Stacey Porter of Australia.

They join earlier signees Justina Kahaku and Felicity Witt.

Egan wins Quiksilver Pro

Australia's Luke Egan became the first surfer to win two Quiksilver Pro titles today when he defeated Brazilian Guilherme Herdy in their 35-minute final off Tavarua Island, Fiji.

Hawaii's Sunny Garcia remains atop the Association of Surfing Professionals World Tour Ratings with 3,000 points. Egan is second at 2,620.

Williams, Swart win

Australian lifeguard Mark Williams beat out Hawaii's John Flanagan by three seconds for the men's title and Kaiser High School sophomore Ashley Swart took women's honors in Monday's Speedo Waikiki Ocean Mile swimming race.

Cup qualifier on TV

The World Cup soccer qualifying match between Brazil and Peru will be shown via satellite at the Pipeline Cafe, Sunday at 10:15 am.

There will be a $15 charge.

An eight-week speed development program run by Mike Nakagawa starts Monday.

Book to Cooperstown

Author Dan Cisco has donated a copy of his book, "Hawaii Sports History, Facts and Statistics," to the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown, N.Y.

Cisco will do book signings Saturday at Barnes and Noble, Kahala Mall, from 3-4 p.m. and June 17 at Borders, Ward Centre, noon-1 p.m. and Borders, Waikele, 4-5 p.m.

Molokai-to-Oahu Race

The fourth annual Molokai to Oahu Paddleboard Race will be held July 30.

Considered the world championship of paddleboard racing, the 32-mile event begins off Papohaku Roadstead in front of the Kaluakoi Hotel at 7 a.m.

The finish line is between two buoys off Maunalua Bay Beach Park in Hawaii Kai.

Hawaii's Sean Monahan, the 1999 winner, Guy Pere, runner-up the past two years, Dawson Jones, California's Tim Gair and Mick Dibetta from Australia, are entered.
