Patrick Fong, board chairman of Finance Insurance Ltd., died Saturday in Kuakini Hospital. He was 73.

Fong also was a director of Finance Enterprises Ltd., a Hawaii-based holding company with interests in insurance, financial services and real estate operations in the state and throughout the Pacific.

Finance Insurance Ltd. is a property and casualty insurance agency serving individuals and businesses.

Fong began his career with the Finance Factors family of companies as branch manager on June 15, 1955. He became vice president of Finance Insurance in 1979 and later became president and then board chairman of Finance Insurance.

Born in Honolulu, he was the son of Fong Choy, one of the six local founders of the Finance Factors group. The other founders were Hiram L. Fong, Daniel B.T. Lau, Clifford H.N. Yee, Mun On Chun and Lup Quon Pang.

Although four of the founders have died, Lau, Hiram Fong and some of the founders' descendants are still active in managing the group of companies.

Patrick Fong belonged to a variety of community groups.

He was a member and past president of the Chinese Civic Association, board member of Moanalua Gardens Association and a member of the Moanalua Senior Citizens Club.

His wife, Pearl, said he led a full life and that they did much traveling, including nine trips to China.

"He was a leader, you know. He was always helping charities and things. . . . He was such a kind person and easy to get along with," she said.

Her husband was in the Army and served in the Pacific during World War II, she said. He attended the University of Hawaii and later received a degree in business administration from the University of California at Berkeley on the GI Bill, his wife said.

Fong is also survived by son Jonathan; daughters Valerie Asari, Deborah Yee and Susan Takashima; brother Leonard; sister Gladys Tong; and four grandchildren.

Services will be at 6 p.m. Monday at the United Church of Christ, 467 N. Judd St. Call after 4:30 p.m. Dinner to follow. Burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Hawaii State Veterans Cemetery, 45-349 Kamehameha Highway, Kaneohe.
