hopeful Karen B. Vea, 18This year's Farrington Scholar attached a nine-page resume of projects, clubs, community activities and volunteer work with her application for a scholarship. She put a lot of energy into her four years at Farrington High School.
Hard work, an exceptional academic record, an engaging interview performance and glowing recommendations from her teachers helped to win Karen B. Vea, 18, a four-year scholarship to the University of Hawaii at Manoa, currently valued at $4,000 a year.
John Flanagan, Star-Bulletin editor and publisher, awarded the scholarship to Vea at the Farrington awards reception last evening. She is ranked 24th in her graduating class.
The Honolulu Star-Bulletin and the Farrington family started the Farrington Scholars program more than 50 years ago to honor the memory of Wallace Rider Farrington, former governor of Hawaii and publisher of the newspaper. It recognizes and supports top graduating seniors who attend UH-Manoa from the Kalihi high school.
Vea, who was in the Health Academy at Farrington, plans to enter the premedical program to pursue a career in medicine, either as a nurse, pediatrician or internist. She is the daughter of Constante and Minda Vea of Ewa Beach.
