"Below Hawaii: A Diver's Guide": By Casey Mahaney and Astrid Witte (Island Heritage); 164 pages; spiral bound; $12.95
Casey Mahaney and partner and wife Astrid Witte have a combined 25 years of experience in the dive and snorkel industry. The couple shares enthusiasm for the ocean through their user-friendly text which introduces readers to dive conditions, dive operators and sites on eight Hawaiian islands and Molokini. The couple also ventures to Midway Atoll.
Maps, dive ratings and visibility levels will help novice and world-class divers wishing to explore a new underwater world. Also helpful for the beginner is an introduction to venomous marine life such as the crown of thorns sea star, fire worms and scorpion fish.
Karin Ireland, who teaches writing at the University of Hawaii, is the author of 15 books.
Her latest work sets out to offer "Simple, effective ways to build children's self-respect and confidence." She has a well-adjusted 26-year-old daughter to demonstrate her ideas work.
Rather than setting down iron-clad rules of behavior, Ireland encourages raising children with "love, compassion and humor."
Preferring to focus on the positive, Ireland offers one suggestion per page, along with her rationale. For instance, she advises "Don't Compare Your Child with Other People." Ireland goes on to say "children need to feel good about who they are, and comparing them to someone else, especially if you're hinting that the other person is more successful, won't nurture that feeling.
"Instead, praise your child for who she is and if you offer suggestions for improvement base them on her own unique potential."
Leonore Horowitz shares the rare and special places she has encountered over 20 years of travels throughout Kauai. She includes favorite beaches, restaurants, tours, shops, accommodations and more.
Guide for families and outdoor extremists covers hikes and strolls to mountain ridges, tropical gardens, ancient ruins, waterfalls, tide pools and more. Adventurous souls will find mountain bike access trails, kayaking and surfing.
Popoki, a spunky Hawaiian tabby cat, doesn't like rules. He and his girl owner Leilani, are visiting the Big Island when Popoki disobeys rules and strays from home, learning how scary it can be to be lost.
This book is for keiki 3 and older. Andrea Evans Winton colorfully captures the volcanic landscape.
