Rainbows Aloy,
Wakakuwa earn WAC
first-team honors

It was back-to-back honors for University of Hawaii pitcher/first baseman Jamie Aloy, who was named to the all-Western Athletic Conference first team for the second year in a row.

The WAC's head coaches also selected Aloy's teammate Kenn Wakakuwa to the first team as a second baseman.

Named to the second team from the Rainbows was outfielder Sean Takamori.

Two players from the University of Hawaii-Hilo were placed on the second team: shortstop Brandon Chaves and outfielder Ryan Petersen.

Aloy, a senior left-hander, posted a 4-4 conference record with a 4.76 ERA. At the plate, the Baldwin High School product led the Rainbows with a .394 batting average in WAC games.

Wakakuwa, a senior who came out of Hilo High, batted .327 in the WAC. He led the Rainbows in runs scored (21), hits (35), RBIs (17) and total bases (42) in conference games.

Takamori, also a senior, cracked the second team with a .371 conference batting average. The Iolani graduate led the Rainbows in WAC games with a .500 slugging percentage and stole eight bases in 11 attempts.

San Jose State sophomore outfielder Junior Ruiz was named the WAC's Player of the Year. Rice junior Kenny Baugh earned Pitcher of the Year honors, and the Freshman of the Year award went to Fresno State pitcher Mike Hernandez.

San Jose State's Sam Piraro was selected as Coach of the Year.
