study is needed before the
proposal can be considered
Star-BulletinFour-lane Meheula Parkway is a frequent agenda topic of the Mililani Mauka/Launani Valley Neighborhood Board, but so far board-favored changes remain on hold.
The board is interested in modifying a traffic signal to provide a left-turn arrow at the intersection of Meheula and Makaikai Street.
Castle and Cooke, the area developers, have agreed to fund the changes to the light, and the board voted its support at a meeting in February 1999.
Cheryl Soon, city transportation services director, said the city needs to discuss the matter with someone on the board and perhaps complete a traffic engineering analysis. Such a proposal requires a detailed study that has not been done, she said.Another proposal is to catch and cite motorists who run stoplights on camera. The board has discussed the pros and cons of establishing this type of photo red-light program at the intersection of Meheula and Ainamakua Drive.
It was noted at an April board meeting that installing a camera at Meheula and Ainamakua might be a deterrent, as the Federal Highway Administration says running red lights has been cut by half at intersections that use such cameras.
Soon said the Legislature gave the authority to install cameras to the state Department of Transportation, not to individual counties.
So far, the state has announced no plans to install a camera at Meheula and Ainamakua.
The board voted on May 16 against bike lanes on Ainamakua Drive and on Wikao Street because they would take away much-needed street parking. The principal of Mililani Middle School had thought a lane on Meheula Parkway running mauka from the Makaikai Street intersection might increase safety of students who bike to school.
But others said it would be dangerous to put a bike lane on Meheula Parkway, a very wide street with fast-moving traffic.
Soon suggested that a community visioning team should work up a bicycle master plan for Mililani.
