Star-BulletinThe University of Hawaii selected women's head track and field coach yesterday but officials at the school would not reveal the name of the candidate.
Senior women's administrator Marilyn Moniz-Kaho'ohanohano said she was still trying to contact the person this morning to discuss the job. She said it was "pemature" to announce anything.
But after the selection committee met yesterday morning with athletic director Hugh Yoshida to make its final choice, Moniz-Kaho'ohanohano said she would only phone the candidate selected.
Long jump All-American Gwen Loud, who won the 1984 NCAA long jump title as a member of the Wahine team, reported she has received several messages from Moniz-Kaho'ohanohano. Loud said she had not gotten back to her as of this morning. She said she has been busy and wants to have plenty of time to talk when she returns Moniz-Kaho'ohanohano's call.
Moniz-Kaho'ohanohano emphasized that even after a coaching selection negotiations follow and matters remain up in the air until both parties agree.
Loud has been an assistant coach at UC Irvine, Long Beach State, and Fresno City College.
None of the other candidates contacted yesterday reported receiving a call from Moniz-Kaho'ohanohano.
Loud had impressive competition for the job.
The other three finalists were 25-year University of Idaho head coach Mike Keller, who coached Olympic decathlon gold medalist Dan O'Brien; renowned exercise physiologist, coach and author Jack Daniels; and former Canadian national team head coach Carmyn James.
