Jennie K. by oneKokx, who won the Jennie K. in 1984 as a University of Hawaii sophomore, played the back nine 1-under par, birdieing the 16th and 18th holes, the latter with a 25-foot putt.
"I'm really excited about my first round," said Kokx, a former UH women's golf coach. "This is my first tournament since I regained my amateur status last July."
UH junior Cho, the 1996 Jennie K. winner, and Kauai High School golfer Kyono shot 75s.
Ohio State graduate Summerset Lovett and Aiea's Merynn Ito, the reigning state girls' prep champion, were at 76. Lovett was 1-under after 12, but triple-bogeyed the par-4 13th.
Three-time champion Anna Umemura, who plays for the University of Tennessee, was seven strokes off the lead at 81.
The 54-hole tournament ends tomorrow, with the leaders teeing off at about 10 a.m.
Aloha Games deadline extended
The deadline for entering the Y2000 Aloha State Games without penalty has been extended to June 1, games director Mark Zeug announced yesterday.Registration books now are available at most NAPA stores, Sports Authority and most health and fitness clubs. Information and on-line registration also are available on the web at alohastategames.com.
The games are open to all Hawaii residents. The registration fee for individual sports is $20 for up to four events in that sport (plus $10 for more than four events or a second sport). Team sports fees are $25 per team plus $10 per team member.
