All three Interscholastic League of Honolulu teams won yesterday in the quarterfinal round of the 24th annual Hawaii High School Athletic Association Girls' State basketball tournament.

Unseeded Mid-Pacific Institute continued its late-season exploits by upsetting No. 4 seed Waiakea, 51-45; Unseeded Punahou got its offense going in the second half to beat No. 3 seed Seabury Hall, 46-37; and No. 1 seed Kamehameha blitzed Maui early in a 62-35 win.

No. 2 seed Kalaheo survived a mild fourth-quarter scare to defeat Honokaa, 55-47.

In tonight's semifinal games at the Stan Sheriff Center, Kamehameha (13-0), riding an overall, two-year 27-game winning streak, plays MPI (10-6) at 7:05 and Kalaheo (13-0) meets Punahou (11-4) at 8:35.

There are consolation games at 2, 3:30 and 5 p.m.

The defending state champion Warriors threw a blanket over the Sabers' offense with a full-court press and half-court trap to start the game.

"Every now and then we try to do something different," said Kamehameha head coach Clay Cockett. "Our strength is playing man pressure. You try and take the ball right away so they can't get into their offense."

Maui (17-4) managed just five field goal attempts in the first 11:36 and trailed, 29-7, two minutes before halftime.

Nine Warriors scored, led by Tai Soo with 14 points. Maui's Kanani Ventura scored 15 points.

Mid-Pacific 51, Waiakea 45: The Owls trailed 33-18 at the half, but Jade Savusa scored 11 consecutive points in the third quarter as MPI cut the deficit to 43-38, then took a lead early in the fourth quarter.

Waiakea's Amy Kaaiakamanu basket tied the scored a 45-45 with 1:18 to play.

Ashley Watamura put her own rebound back to break the tie with 58 seconds left, then converted a free throw as the Owls scored the game's last six points.

"We went into the locker room at halftime and told ourselves we came this far, to go back out and try our best to show the other team we want it more," said Savusa who finished with 17 points.

"We learned they all shot right-handed and we knew we had to play them tighter on defense," said Watamura, who scored 15 points and had 11 rebounds.

Punahou 46, Seabury Hall 37: The Buffanblu turned a two-point, halftime lead into a 16-point (39-23) advantage with five minutes left in the fourth quarter.

Milia Macfarlane contributed five points and Elyse Umeda made two field goals during Punahou's 22-8 run.

"Coach (Shelley Fey) told us at halftime we had to be patient on offense and help on defense, double down on their big girls. It came down to patience and the mental game," said Macfarlane.

Kalaheo 55, Honokaa 47: The Mustangs led 42-21 after three quarters, but Honokaa made things interesting with a 26-point final quarter.

"I thought we had them put away, but Honokaa is scrappy and keep coming at you," said Kalaheo head coach Chico Furtado.

Brandy Richardson scored 11 points and Heather Gonsalves had 10 for the Mustangs.

Erika Tadio and Hawea Ah Loy scored 17 and 15 points, respectively, for the Dragons (11-4).
