Degen WAC’s
player of year

Dana Degen of the University of Hawaii has been named the Western Athletic Conference softball Player of the Year.

She batted .401, with a school-record nine home runs and 36 runs batted in.

Degen was named to the all-conference first team for the fourth year.

She is the second Wahine to win player of the year honors. Brooke Wilkins was named Big West Pitcher of the Year in 1994 and 1995.

Joining Degen on the all-conference first team is Wahine first baseman Joyce Lum, who also won first-team honors two years ago.

Wahine pitcher Desiree Duran was named to the all-conference second team.

Three University of Hawaii sailors received All-Pacific Coast Intercollegiate Yacht Racing Association honors yesterday.

Molly O'Bryan was named one of six All-PCIYRA women's skippers. Brent Harrill was named as a coed skipper and Emi Tottori received crew honors.

The 13th-ranked Wahine sailors will compete in the Women's National Invitational May 28-30 in St. Mary's City, Md.

Former Punahou and Ohio State punter Scott Terna has signed a free agent contract with the NFL's Green Bay Packers.

Terna, who is at a Packers minicamp this week, is in competition with three other punters for a job.

"I plan on making the best of this opportunity," said Terna yesterday.

Terna has been trying to crack an NFL roster since he was graduated from Ohio State in 1995 with a degree in sociology.

The 6-foot, 212-pound Kaneohe native played in the 1995 Hula Bowl.
