death of infant son
Star-BulletinA Makakilo man has been indicted for causing the death of his 4-month-old son, his attorney confirmed.
Robert Coy III made an initial appearance in District Court yesterday only to learn he later had been indicted by an Oahu grand jury.
Judge I. Norman Lewis ordered Robert Coy III to appear June 13 for an evidentiary hearing and granted him permission to fly to Florida to attend his son's funeral.
Coy, a student at Hawaii Pacific University, is free after posting $100,000 bail.
He has no criminal record and is expected to meet his court obligations before leaving for Florida, his attorney Brook Hart said.
Police had charged Coy on Thursday with second-degree murder for causing the death of Robert Coy III, who died a week ago today.
He told police he had put his son on the bed and went to the bathroom when he heard a thump and found his son on the floor with a pulse but not breathing.
He denied shaking or hitting his son.
However, doctors who examined the infant said he had been "shakened," and suffered bleeding to the brain and hemorrhaging to the retinas of the eyes. Doctors concluded the injuries were likely caused by child abuse.
Coy's wife, a Navy chief, was not at home at the time of the incident. The couple's 20-month old daughter also was under Coy's care.
