A cliche in any
other language ...

HAWAII is making lots of national news these days and even getting a little international attention, complete with the ever-present sports cliche. A Tahiti paper, written in French, carried a long story about Sheraton moving intoMug shot the country (complete with photo of Starwood Hawaii exec Keith Vierra.) The story began one section with, "Sheraton entend placer la barrae plus haut," which is something akin to "raising the bar," which along with "leveling the playing field" has found its way into stories having nothing to do with sports ... Then there was Maile Griffith, wife of Queen's Health Systems CEO Dick Griffith -- she showed up on CBS' "Early Show" one morning last week as the third place winner in Photopoint.com's national photo contest that received more than 10.5 million entries. She won a $10,000 Internet shopping spree ...

NOT showing up for a couple of mornings on KHNL has been weatherman Guy Hagi, who as so many before him, got caught uttering some bad language when he thought the mike was off last week. His partner, Lyle Galdeira, offered a mea culpa the next morning for the "regrettable incident" in which "inappropriate comments" were made. He offered an apology and Hagi, after sitting out for a couple of mornings and the weekend, is slated to return to the air tomorrow ... Anthony Ruivivar showed up in the audience at the Knicks-Heat basketball playoff game yesterday. It was a carefully set up effort on behalf of NBC to show stars from their programs, in Ruivivar's case, "Third Watch." ...

A star is born

ONCE known simply as Don Ho's daughter, Hoku was the subject of a Q&A feature in yesterday's San Francisco Chronicle. The interview points out how Hoku, a simple, Christian girl, distances herself from the sensual outpourings of other young singers like Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears. Asked if her name implied she was destined to be a "Star," Hoku replied, "My dad said he named me Hoku because when he brought me home from the hospital the stars in my eyes melted his heart. Isn't that sweet?" The questioner provided his own answer: "The truth is, with 10 kids, he was running out of good names, and he just looked up and saw a star." Hoku laughed and said, "That's probably what it was, yeah." ... The new question is that if daddy Don is selecting "Legends of Hawaii" to appear with him in the Starbucks Starlight Festival at the Shell June 2, why not toss Hoku, perhaps a future "legend," into the program? ...

THE date has been set for the wedding vows between singer Loretta Ables and adman Dave Sayre. They'll tie the knot on June 18 at Central Union Church ... Slack-key guitar expert Ledward Kaapana will be performing Saturday at the Academy of Arts Theatre in what is being called "Appreciation Night." Browsing through the Internet "Real Player" section, I found Led's new album, "Black Sands," featured ...

Future bankers?

Whiz kids from Iolani took top honors in the 12th District Federal Reserve Regional Economics Challenge, defeating teams from seven other states to win an all-expenses paid trip to San Francisco. Winning team members Brad Lee, Kit Okimoto and Casey Wong, along with Iolani teacher and coach Dick Rankin, voted unanimously for a side trip to 3Com Park to see the Giants. And mahalo to Servco for stepping up with financial support when last year's sponsor dropped out ...
