Mama ... For Giving Me Love: By Pomai & Loeka Longakits give
tribute to mom
(L&L/Morning Star) JESSE Rivera recorded an original Mother's Day song last year and now Pomai and Loeka Longakit follow suit with an expository ode to mom as written by their father. It expresses in broad dramatic style Lloyd Longakit's boundless gratitude to his mother. The kids' labored rendition makes it a tribute to their mother and other female ancestors as well. Two originals by Pomai that were originally released on P&L's "Dancing All Night" album are recycled. "Picture on the Wall" shows her growing skill as a local pop songwriter and merits play on Hawaii's island music radio stations. In the meantime, this CD single will likely get some sales as a last-minute Mother's Day gift.

Black Sand: By Ledward Kaapana
(Dancing Cat 38015-2) LEDWARD Kaapana has such a diverse repertoire that slack-key fans will welcome this back-to-basics solo instrumental studio album. It is a relaxing and tranquil collection that epitomizes the nahenahe (gentle, melodious) slack-key tradition.Kaapana and producer George Winston also include two duets, a solo on autoharp, and a vocal number. With the extensive annotation, this is a perfect introduction to Kaapana and Hawaiian slack-key.

Island Feelings: By Ten Feet
(Mass Appeal Entertainment MAE 2000) POP remakes are usually a source of embarrassment for local groups. Ten Feet proves one of the rare exceptions as they find fresh perspectives on "Islands in the Stream" and "Little Wing." They surpass the local norm with several others.Other facets of the repertoire include reggae, Jawaiian, local pop, African-American rap and, at times, smarmy "slow jams. "Island Feeling," by group members Andres "Drez" Delos Santos and Josiah Kekoa, is the strongest original. Two versions are included, the original Jawaiian arrangement and a "booty remix" by producer/ mentor Duane Oyama. Both will appeal to the Jawaiian crowd and Hawaii's island music radio stations.
Two other originals, "My Bedroom" and "Someday," deserve play.
