On paper, anyway, the Island Movers State Boys' and Girls' Track and Field Championships figure to be very exciting. Doping the state
track meetKamehameha (a projected 37 points), Mililani (35) and Punahou (32-1/2) will probably be in it at the end for the boys.
It should come down to Mililani (45) and Punahou (43-1/2) for the girls.
Dropped batons, false starts and injuries can change all that. So can personal-best performances from unexpected stars.
This is the last chance to see senior record-holders Victoria Chang and Vera Simms. Punahou's Chang will run for Stanford next year, and Mililani's Simms will hurdle for Michigan.
ILH girls' water polo teams battle for title
The ILH girls' water polo tournament semifinals are tomorrow, with top seed Punahou hosting the team that upset them earlier in the year, Pac-Five, at 4:30 p.m.No. 2 Iolani and No. 3 Kamehameha will square off after the first game in the other semifinal.
The final will be played Friday at Punahou, at 4:30 p.m. If a team other than Punahou wins the tournament, they will battle the Buffanblu Tuesday for the overall ILH title.
TRACK AND FIELD: State trials tomorrow at Mililani, finals Saturday
The Island Movers State Track and Field Championships get under way tomorrow at Mililani High School, with trials beginning at noon (field events) and 3:15 p.m. (running). The finals are Saturday at Mililani. Field events start at 3:30 p.m. and running at 5:30 p.m. The Punahou girls' and boys' teams will each be looking to win their fifth consecutive state title.
BOYS' GOLF: Waiakea hunts third state crown in row
The David Ishii Boys' State Golf Tournament tees off tomorrow at 6:45 a.m. at the Kauai Lagoons Mokihana Course. The final round is Friday. Jarett Hamamoto of Waiakea fired one of the best rounds in the league championships - a final round 67 and a 212 total - and will try to lead the Warriors to their third straight team title.
