Philipp, Simms
lead Trojans to defense
of OIA track titles

If the Mililani track and field teams keep "messing up" like this, they could bumble right into their first state championships.

Last night the host Trojans successfully defended their boys' and girls' Oahu Interscholastic Association titles. They did it despite a dropped baton for the girls and boys' standout Robby Philipp's insistence that he made some kind of mistake.

Philipp ran a 52.4-second split on the 4x400 relay and gave the Trojans the lead they would keep in the meet's final event.

But his first reaction was to talk about some self-imagined gaffe that no one else noticed.

And this was just a few minutes after he ran 9:36.26 to finish second to teammate Jeff Lim (meet record 9:32.26) in the 3,000.

Earlier, the state cross- country champion won the 1,500 (meet record 4:10.06) and 800 (1:59.12).

"Sorry for messing up," he told distance coach Paul Oshiro.

It was hard to see the error in Philipp's ways, especially since he'd accounted for 18 of the Trojans' 57 points.

"Robby's really stepping up. He's the big kahuna," said teammate Daireyon Abrams, who had a good night himself, winning the 300 intermediate hurdles in 40.22 and anchoring the winning 4x400.

"We're pretty much just a running team, so coach (Shane Akamine) told us we're 30 points behind to start the meet," Philipp said. "Luckily, we accomplished our goals. Jeff Lim, Daireyon Abrams, Kali French, Andrew Kamikawa ... all had great nights."

So did Kahuku, which made a meet of it with only five athletes.

The Red Raiders were second with 50 points, as Anthony Smith won the discus (151 feet, 2 inches) and the shot put (50 feet, 4 inches), and Mike Palefau took first in the 100 (11.19), and ran a leg on the winning 4x100 (43.52) team.

Kalaheo was right behind Kahuku with 49 points, thanks to Chris Chong.

Chong won the 400 (50.67) and the triple jump (44-6). He was also third in the long jump and ran on the second-place 4x100 team.

While the Mililani boys' so-called mistake was hard to find, the girls' error was there for all to see -- a baton loose on the ground in the 4x100 relay.

But the Trojans, with Vera Simms running anchor, recovered to finish fifth, good for a point.

Simms took little consolation in making something out of nothing, and Akamine was concerned.

"People tell us our relays are a sure thing," he said. "But they never really are. The passes are key."

Roosevelt won the relay in 51.34. Coupled with an Oahu-record 10-6 pole vault by Kim Higa (who also ran a leg on the 4x100), the Rough Riders had a short-lived lead.

But Simms' brilliance -- she won four individual events and anchored a winning relay -- and Mililani's depth overwhelmed Roosevelt and the rest of the field.

In the 100 high hurdles, Simms ran 15.02 to break her own record of 15.24 set last year. She then won the 100 in 12.38.

Later, Simms blew away the record she set two days earlier in the trials in the 300 low hurdles. Her 43.26 was more than five second better than second-place Natasha Kai of Kahuku. Simms also took the long jump (17-5).

She saved the best for last. With Kelsi Kojima, Michelle Murphy and Cherina Tucker giving her a big lead, Simms anchored a 4:02.01 winning 4x400 relay.

The time broke the 21-year-old record of 4:03.80 by Moanalua.

"I guess that makes up for the other relay," Simms said.

The Trojans won with 68 points. Kahuku's four-girl team of Kai, her sister Krisha, and Ashlee and Sassy Fely was second with 38.

Kaiser, behind Ashley Swart's double in the 1,500 (meet-record 5:08.24) and 3,000 (11:30.91), was third with 30. Roosevelt was fourth with 29.

Natasha Kai turned in the toughest performance of the meet. After hurting her left hamstring while finishing second in the long jump, she returned to win the 200 in 26.49. She also won the high jump (5-2). Krisha Kai won the triple jump with a 35-4 mark.
