By David Higa
in OIA baseball
title game
Special to the Star-BulletinBig innings were the theme of the night as No. 2 seeds Kailua and Mililani advanced to tonight's 7 p.m. title game of the Oahu Interscholastic Association baseball tournament at Rainbow Stadium.
Both teams had multiple-run innings that turned close games into routs over their respective top-seeded opponents.
Yesterday, Kailua (9-2), the second seed in the East, scored 10 runs in the seventh to rally past Leilehua, 10-3. In the second semifinal, Mililani (11-1), seeded No. 2 in the West, scored four in the fourth to top Castle, 9-3.
Leilehua and Castle meet at 4 p.m. for third place.
In the consolation bracket of the tournament, Campbell and Kalani advanced to today's 1:30 p.m. fifth-place game. The winner gets the fifth OIA spot in the state tourney.
Kailua 10, No. 7 Leilehua 3: It was a pitchers' duel at the start with Kailua's Kawika Kekaula and Leilehua's Brandon Taylor dominating over the first six innings with matching shutouts.
The scoreless tie ended in the seventh.
Kailua's Ryan Exstrom reached on an error and, after two consecutive bunt singles loaded the bases, Exstrom scored on a throwing error.
Pinch hitter Justin Akagi then cleared the bases with a three-run triple to give Kailua a 4-0 lead.
Before recording an out, Kailua batted around and Exstrom came to the plate with the bases loaded. He hit a blast over the right field wall for a grand slam, giving Kailua a 10-0 lead.
Leilehua scored three runs in the bottom of the inning but the rally fell short.
Kailua coach Cory Ishigo said he wants to keep his team from looking ahead to the state tournament.
"We have to be ready to play (tonight)," he said. "We must remain focused."
