Ito wins state
girls’ golf title

PRINCEVILLE, Kauai -- Aiea's Merynn Ito struggled early yesterday but ended up cruising to a six-stroke victory in the David Ishii Girls' State Golf Championship at the Princeville Makai Course.

Ito finished the first nine holes of the second round at 3-over 39. However, she played even-par golf the rest of the way, finishing with a 75 for a total of 1-under 143.

Ito was the only golfer to shoot under par for the tournament.

Seabury Hall's Joan Shimozaki and Waiakea's Leah Whiting finished tied for second at 149 (5-over). Shimozaki carded a 2-under 70 yesterday while Whiting had a final round 77.

Defending state champion Shayna Miyajima of Baldwin finished fourth at 152 after struggling to a final round 77.

Waiakea easily won the team competition with a 15-stroke win over Hilo.

The Warriors finished with a team aggregate score of 485 followed by the Vikings at 499. Kauai finished third at 510.
