past VulcansHILO -- Two outbursts proved decisive in a Western Athletic Conference game that was a pitcher's battle for seven innings.
The University of Hawaii Rainbows, nursing a 3-2 lead, scored five runs in the eighth inning and seven more in the ninth for 15-4 victory over the University of Hawaii at Hilo last night.
The largest crowd (752) of the season at Francis Wong Stadium watched Maui sons Jamie Aloy (Baldwin) and Kaholo Rickard (Lahainaluna) match pitch for pitch until the eighth.
With one down in that inning, Nate Jackson singled, the second of his four hits, and moved to third on Rickard's wild pickoff attempt.
Sean Takamori's second sacrifice fly of the game scored Jackson for a 4-2 UH lead.
Matt Purtell and Aloy followed with singles. With a 3-0 count, Kenn Wakakuwa tripled over the head of Vulcan center fielder Brian Rooke.
"He had the green light. I had just told him if it's a fastball, swing," Rainbow head coach Les Murakami said. "I was almost certain Rickard was coming with a fastball."
That ended Rickard's night on the mound. It was the first time the 'Bows have enjoyed success against the 6-foot-1 right-hander in three games the last two years.
Patrick Scalabrini also tripled home a run in the inning.
The Vulcans then knocked Aloy out in the bottom of the eighth.
Shaye Miura, Jacob Ryan, Ryan Petersen and Paul Yap, who was 4-for-4, connected for consecutive singles that produced two runs, cutting the UH lead in half, 8-4.
Grant Sato came on in relief and induced Billy Rayl to hit into an inning-ending double play.
The Rainbows answered with a seven-run ninth highlighted by Scalabrini's three-run homer to left, his first as a 'Bow.
Jackson, who batted from the right side instead of switch hitting, was 4-for-5 and scored three runs.
"All of a sudden, they get confidence and it's hard to stop them. I think, right now, Jackson is in that mode," said Murakami.
Relief pitcher Aaron Pribble played first base and was 2-for-5 with three RBIs. He is 5-for-11 in the last three games as a batter.
Although he made two errors on ground balls, the 6-5 Pribble had a solid night in the field.
"He snagged two line drives and he saved three high throws from infielders. What a target," Murakami said.
Bryan Lee pitched the ninth for the 'Bows. He hit a batter and another Vulcan reached base on an error, but Lee struck out the side.
"Lee just blew them away. He was throwing about 90," Murakami said.
The teams play an afternoon game today in Hilo and conclude the series with a 1 p.m. game in Kona tomorrow.
