Former Rainbow
Karl remains in
Rockies’ rotation

DENVER -- Still trying to steer clear of the hazards at Coors Field, Scott Karl has enough to worry about without looking over his left shoulder. Instead, he put it to work.

The former University of Hawaii left-hander made a successful bid to stay in Colorado's rotation and Jeffrey Hammonds supported him with his second career grand slam as the Rockies beat the Montreal Expos, 12-8, last night.

Staked to a 7-0 lead after three innings, Karl (1-2) gave up four runs and nine hits in six innings to earn another start Sunday in San Francisco. His effort pushed Brian Bohanon to the bullpen as right-hander Rolando Arrojo is set to come off the disabled list later this week.

"I didn't approach it like I was pitching for my job," Karl said. "I don't play that way. I play to win. Screw all that other stuff that gets cooked up in the press."
