Another win
By Pat Bigold
for Viloria
Star-BulletinWaipahu's Brian Viloria said he and Mexican champion Liberio Romero have to stop meeting.
For the third time in little over a month, the two Olympians fought last night to the same conclusion in a light flyweight bout: a Viloria win.
"We hope we don't see each other again until Sydney, and not even then," said Viloria.
Viloria toyed with a nearly defenseless Romero in a 17-6 decision in a U.S. vs. Mexico dual meet exhibition at the Foxwoods Resort and Casino on the grounds of the Mashantucket-Pequot tribe reservation in Connecticut before about 1,600 fans.
It was the first of three dual meets he will fight between now and August.
"He was just getting frustrated and I was just having fun," said Viloria.
Viloria beat Romero, 8-4, in Tijuana, Mexico, on April 22 for the Central American qualifier championship. He also won a 10-8 decision on March 28 in the quarterfinals of the North American qualifier in Tampa, Fla.
"I've figured out his style now," said Viloria who is 5-2 against Romero, a boxer he's fought more than any other opponent in his career.
Viloria was to return to Hawaii today for another weeklong stay at home before leaving to attend an Olympic media event in Houston next week.
