Staff and wire reports
drop free-agent
Rainbow WarrenThe problem of finding a suitable slot for Yaphet Warren at the University of Hawaii proved true for the Seattle Seahawks as well. Warren was one of three players released yesterday by the National Football League team after the completion of its weekend mini-camp.
Warren played outside linebacker for the Rainbows, but wasn't big enough for the position in the NFL. So the Seahawks tried him at strong safety in the three-day mini-camp and decided it was a transition Warren wasn't ready to make.
From the Washington area, Warren signed a free-agent contract with the Seahawks on April 24. He came to the Hawaii program three years ago after playing one season for the University of Idaho.
Trying to find a position for him proved difficult for former UH head coach Fred vonAppen. Warren was a fullback on the scout team who was moved to the defensive side of the football his junior season.
Injuries plagued him throughout the 1998 season. He even was involved in a moped accident that threatened his career.
Warren thrived as an outside linebacker in June Jones' system. The 6-foot-1, 200-pound player was perfect for what Hawaii ran defensively, but he just didn't possess the quickness to cover wideouts downfield.
He is the first of nine UH players to be drafted or signed as free agents this spring to be released.
