leads Azusa
to track title

Star-BulletinKaneohe's Bryan Clay scored 58 points in nine events to lead host Azusa Pacific University to the championship of the Golden State Athletic Conference track and field championships last weekend.
Clay, a sophomore who is the Pan Am Junior Games gold medalist in the decathlon, was named best male performer of the meet as his points made the difference for Azusa.
Azusa scored 250 points to second-place Point Loma Nazarene's 214 points.
The former Castle High School standout will go to the NAIA outdoor finals at Simon Fraser University in Abbotsford, British Columbia, May 25-26, where he will try to qualify for a berth in the Olympic decathlon trials.
Clay needs 7,900 points to make the trials, which will be held in July in Sacramento, Calif.
Clay's individual performances at the Golden State Athletic Conference meet included:
100 meters -- 10.52 seconds (electronic time, no wind, second place).110 meter high hurdles -- 14.39 (electronic time, no wind, first place).
High jump -- 6 feet, 4 inches (first place).
Pole vault -- 13 (second place).
Long jump -- 22-1 (fourth place).
Shot put -- 42-6 (eighth place).
Javelin -- 195-11 (third place).
Clay also helped Azusa win the 4 x 400 relay (3:17.66) and finish second in the 4 x 100 relay (42.41).
