East-West CenterThe American Civil Liberties Union of Hawaii will hold a free public forum May 10 on "Threats to Dissent in the 21st Century."
The forum, co-sponsored by the League of Women Voters, will mark the release of a biography on local ACLU founder Allan Saunders. It will be held from 5-7 p.m. in the East-West Center's Imin International Conference Center.
National ACLU general counsel Susan Herman will be the keynote speaker, while attorney Evan Shirley will talk about the local situation.
Herman is a professor of law at Brooklyn Law School and a frequent author and co-writer of briefs for the ACLU in U.S. Supreme Court litigation. She will also address the Maui County Bar Association May 8 as part of Law Week.
Shirley has been in involved in recent church-state issues. His clients ended prayer breakfasts for public officials and also opposed the fish symbol on the doors of state legislators.
Saunders was a professor of political science at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Many of the state's most prominent leaders were his students, including U.S. Sen. Daniel Inouye and U.S. Rep. Patsy Mink. He also founded the local affiliate of the League of Women Voters.
The book, "Allan Saunders: The Man and His Legacy," is a collection of essays by former students, colleagues and friends. Published by University of Hawaii Press, it is now available in bookstores.
