Kayak pair earn

gold in JapanStephanie Dean and Ana Schladermundt, two Hawaii Canoe & Kayak Team members, won gold medals in the 200-meter K-4 event at the Mioshi Ladies Cup Regatta over the weekend in Japan.
Dean and Schladermundt teamed up with Marie and Jeanne Mijalis in the four-person kayak to win the gold, beating out China and New Zealand.
They also won a silver medal in the same K-4 boat at the 500-meter distance.
Schladermundt and Dean will return to the U.S. to prepare for the June 10-11 Olympic trials next month at Chula Vista, Calif.
Kathy Colin, another Hawaii kayaker, is favored to win the women's K-1 Olympic berth and be part of the Olympic K-2 boat, should the U.S. earn a women's K-2 slot at the Sydney Games.
Among the men, Peter Newton, also from Hawaii, is favored to be part of the men's K-4 Olympic boat, and also might qualify on the men's K-2 as well.
Tesche, Ricote net titles
Anoulom Tesche won the men's singles title and Silvia Ricote took the women's singles crown in the 74th Oahu Public Parks tennis tournament yesterday at the Diamond Head Tennis Center.Tesche defeated Ko Dericks, 6-4, 7-5, in the men's final and Ricote beat Chloe Vihag, 7-5, 6-2, in the women's final.
The next major public event is the May 20-21 Hawaii Open at Diamond Head Tennis Center. The entry deadline is Friday, May 12.
Yamauchi top weightlifter
Kyle Yamauchi, a 16-year-old featherweight, set two records in the Hawaii State Weightlifting Championships Saturday at Windward Mall.Yamauchi had a two-lift total of 435 pounds for one state mark in the boys' 136-pound class and his 237-pound jerk also broke the previous state record.
Three Emmys for Ironman
NBC-TV's broadcast of the 1999 Ironman Triathlon captured three Sports Emmys at the recent awards show in New York.The Ironman broadcast was honored by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences for Outstanding Edited Sports Special, Outstanding Electronic Camera Work and Outstanding Film Cinematography.
