Once is not enough for Kahuku.

One night after ousting defending Oahu Interscholastic Association West champion Pearl City in double overtime, the Red Raiders were at it again.

Kahuku (8-3) upset previously unbeaten and third-ranked Moanalua in overtime, 56-55, in the quarterfinals of the OIA girls' basketball tournament last night at Moanalua High School.

The win secured Kahuku a spot in next month's state tournament. The Menehunes, the Western Division winner, finished at 10-1.

"It was a gutsy performance by both teams,'' Moanalua coach Dana Dias said. "Their size and difference in style were key. We are more of a running team as compared to Kahuku. They're more of an athletic, half-court team."

The Raiders were led by April Atuaia's game-high 22 points, 12 rebounds and four assists.

"We had to stay in a zone against them,'' Kahuku coach Mona Ah Hoy said. "We know that they were quicker than us . . . We put April in the middle for added rebounding."

Moanalua trailed, 30-24 at halftime. The Menehunes rallied after intermission behind Mayumi Stevens, who finished with 19 points.

Tied at 48-48, the Menehunes had a chance to win it at the end of regulation but Shelly Salie's putback came after time had expired.

A 3-pointer by Stevens to open the overtime put the Menehunes ahead and Moanalua maintained the lead until the final two minutes.

Atuaia hit a layup to cut the lead to 55-54. She was fouled after stealing an inbounds pass and made one free throw to tie it at 55.

Faava Laban's free throw with 2.9 seconds left decided the game.

Kahuku travels to Nanakuli on Thursday for one semifinal. Defending OIA champion Kalaheo hosts Leilehua in the other semifinal.
