Mihana has big
little Duc’s show

MIHANA SOUZA puts on a big little show with guitarist Bobby Young Thursday nights at Duc's bistro, owned by Duc Nguyen and his wife, Minh Nga Vu. The two Mug shotguitarists stroll from table to table, with Mihana, who is in fine voice, singing island songs for diners and the cocktail crowd. The daughter of living isle music legend Irmgard Aluli, Mihana always includes songs written by her mom, such as "Puamana" and "E Maliu Mai." Often, guests join her in singing or dancing hula ... Irmgard will be honored at the Hawaii Alliance for Arts Education's Alliance Awards June 3 at the Hawaii Theatre. Graphic artist Clarence Lee will receive "special recognition." Entertainment will be by Irmgard's group Puamana, as well as Na Leo Pilimehana, Tau Dance Theatre and Na Keiki of Halau Hula Olana. L'Uraku is providing food beforehand. Deacon to Nabors' rescue

"The 'Niners will be back," said John Wilbur, speaking of the S.F. 49ers at a recent Waikiki Shell concert. Jim Nabors was a big Rams' fan when the team was in L.A. and he joined the football talk. He said he was with the Rams on an opposing team's field after a game and two guys tried to pull off his coat. Suddenly, huge Deacon Jones appeared from nowhere and slammed his arms down on the arms of the two ruffians pulling at the coat. "Stick with me," the 300-plus-pound L.A. defensive lineman told Nabors. Wilbur was a linebacker for Washington in the 1972 Super Bowl which Miami won, completing its perfect season. He played against Deacon during his NFL career and said he was like a freight train coming at you full speed and low. Nabors was honored last night at the Hawaii Theatre fund-raiser at the Kahala Mandarin. Nabors has donated his services for the theater's Christmas show for three years ...

Henry Mancini wrote wonderful music and his daughter, Monica, did a wonderful job in singing it last weekend with the Honolulu Pops, conducted by Matt Catingub. Glenn Medeiros opened the Concert Hall show. Besides singing, Glenn put two of his voice students, Chrissy Naruo, 14, and wheelchair-bound Ken Tatafu, 13, in the spotlight. All were warmly received. Roberta Flack stars in a Starbucks starlight Festival with the Honolulu Symphony at Waikiki Shell at 7 p.m. next Saturday. B.B. Shawn opens ...

During their stay, cast members of Cool Heat Urban Beat displayed hip-hop, tap, break dancing and more at a workshop for members of the Kamehameha Performing Arts Company at the school. The students responded with hula, teaching the pros isle moves. Pam Gasinski and Randie Fong arranged the treat ... Escada and the Japanese Women's Society present a luncheon fashion show May 7, at Sheraton Waikiki ...

It's 'Big Pi' Loden now

Just call isle attorney Elliot "Buzz" Loden "Big Pi" Loden now. Tonight Buzz (U. of Florida Class of '61), will be inducted into the Big Pi Chapter of Pi Lambda Phi Fraternity in Gainesville, Fla. The Big Pi is awarded to the fraternity's alums who have received outstanding recognition ... Those who want to sample what the Ihilani Spa is like may visit Neiman Marcus during "The Beauty Event" Thursday through next Saturday and get a free 10-minute massage.
