UH, Tulsa women split

The University of Hawaii and University of Tulsa exchanged shutouts in a WAC softball doubleheader yesterday at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

The Wahine (20-23, 6-8 WAC) won the first game, 2-0, on a three-hitter by Desiree Duran.

Duran (8-4) went into the sixth inning with a perfect game. She struck out 12 and walked one.

Tulsa's Angela Wedlake pitched a one-hitter in the second game, leading the Golden Hurricane (18-27, 6-8) to a 6-0 win.

Third baseman Melissa McGie singled to right field to lead off the third inning for Hawaii's lone hit.

In the opening game, catcher Dana Degen drove in both Wahine runs in the first with a two-out double.

Four Wahine seniors play their final two home games today against Tulsa.The doubleheader opener starts at 5 p.m.

Pac-West softball honors

Outfielder Rachel Loo of the Hawaii-Hilo softball team has earned Pacific West Academic All-Conference honors.

The junior from Lanai City is majoring in political science.

Other Hawaii softball players to be honored academically are Brigham Young-Hawaii's Melinda Clarke, Alisha Durrette, Michelle Gibson and Margaret Reynolds and Hawaii Pacific's Susie Schoales and Samee Fernandez.

A student-athlete must have at least a 3.2 GPA to be selected.

Swamp Romp

More than 1,200 runners are expected to take part in tomorrow's sixth annual Swamp Romp, a 5.2-mile race for six-person teams through natural and man-made obstacles at the Kaneohe Marine Base.

Awards will be presented to the top three male, female, coed and masters teams.

Schofield wrestling meet

The Hawaii-USA Wrestling Tournament will be held tomorrow at the Martinez Fitness Center Schofield Barracks Gym.

Weigh-ins are from 8 to 9 a.m. Freestyle wrestling begins at 10.

A current USA Wrestling card is required. The entry fee is $3 and cards are available for $25.

Soccer certification

The National Soccer Academy (NSA) will conduct a Soccer Teacher Certification Course (Level 1) May 5-6.

The classroom portion of the clinic will be conducted May 5 at the Waikele Park conference room from 6 to 9:30 p.m. Topics of instruction include age- and skill-level appropriate training, how to organize a training session, and creativity in teaching.

The field portion of the clinic is May 6 at Salt Lake District Park from noon to 3:45 p.m. The course, open to anyone 16 years and older, will be conducted by Fred Hsu.

A registration fee of $45 covers both sessions, and includes an NSA T-shirt. The fee will be reimbursed to any participant selected to become an NSA Soccer Teacher for the upcoming 2000-2001 soccer season.
