Bold star visits
beautiful Oahu

WHAT do you think of when you hear the term "B&B?" If it's "Bed & Breakfast," chances are you're one of those travelers who likes to see out of the way places and save a buck or two on lodging. If you're a couch potato or addicted to soap operas on TV, there's no doubt it stands for "The Bold and Mug shotthe Beautiful." The bold and beautiful star of that show, Sarah Buxton, is coming to town for a week on May 4, and you can bet she won't be staying in a "B&B"! Buxton, a former star of Aaron Spelling's "Sunset Beach," most likely won't spend all her time at Oahu's Sunset Beach either, though she is a surfing fanatic, so just might work her way out there ...

FORMER Isle D.J. Kamasami Kong is back on one of his frequent excursions from Osaka, Japan, where his radio show is heard by some 8 million listeners. He popped in for the "Brown Bags to Stardom" competition, which he started with Jeff Coelho back in 1981. Kong, who maintains on-air ties with all manner of visitors to Osaka who hail from Hawaii -- including our sumo stars -- has seen the introduction of the Kong Burger and Kong Granita to Osaka eateries. But it was a new one on him when on his current visit here he found a local group calling itself Kamikaze Kong. Close, but no residuals ...

Big Wave gets bigger

THAT "Big Wave Honolulu" concert starring Japanese pop superstar Namie Amuro at the Waikiki Shell May 14 is getting bigger. Added to the bill is Kalapana, which shouldn't come as a surprise since the group's bass player, Kenji Sano, doubles as Amuro's music director. Other Kalapana members are Malani Bilyeu, Gaylord Holomalia and D.J. Pratt. They'll follow ukulele whiz Jake Shimabukuro in the Hawaii United Okinawa Association benefit ...

LOCAL playwrights are putting Hawaii in a rarefied creative atmosphere, says HTY's Dan Kelin. Four playwrights from the theater group's Pacific Young Playwrights made the first round of a Young Playwrights of New York national competition. "Four in one year is incredible," gushes Kelin. Take a bow Daniel Akiyama, Dance Aoki, Sara Antill and Shaaroni Wong. In addition, Aoki and Susan Stanton are in the semi-finalist round in a competition in L.A. "We seem to be pumping out young playwrights as fast as N.Y. itself," observes Kelin, adding, "The best news is that all of them still write." ...

IT was quite a heady experience for Scott Ingwers, food and beverage honcho at the Maui Prince Hotel. As part of the Jerry Rice 127 Foundation Hawaii Tour 2000, Ingwers played on Team Hawaii vs. Team NFL in basketball games on Maui and the Big Island, as well as in a golf tournament at Makena. He was asked for autographs by numerous kids in attendance, and rather than go into a speech about how he's not a famous player, he merely signed his name. The kids can work it all out when they get old enough ...

Amazing Graze

WE'RE No. 98! Well, it's better than nothing. Mike Terry of Belt Collins was a-mazed to find his Pineapple Garden Maze at Dole Plantation Center made the list of Top 100 adventures in National Geographic Magazine. It may rank as No. 98, but the largest and longest permanent maze is the only man-made adventure from Hawaii on the list, which includes kayaking the Na Pali Coast and driving the road to Hana. No. 1 Adventure: Rafting the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon ...
