Chaminade, UHH
split twin bill

Michelle Canchola pitched a two-hitter as the University of Hawaii-Hilo softball team beat Chaminade, 1-0, yesterday at the UHH field yesterday.

The Silverswords won the second game, 2-1, with Chris Pascua's RBI single in the first and an unearned run in the second keying the victory.

UH-Hilo is now 23-21, and Chaminade is 23-18.

Wahine sail into Top 20

The University of Hawaii women's sailing team is ranked 14th in Sailing World magazine's latest poll.

The Wahine, unranked since the preseason, moved into the poll with a third-place showing at the Pacific Coast Women's District Championships, April 15-16.

UH's co-ed team fell from 12th to 15th in its poll.

St. Mary's tops the co-ed poll, while USC is No. 1 among the women's teams.

UH third after first round

The University of Hawaii's Melissa Shintani tied for sixth place with a 5-over-par 77 yesterday in the first round of the Western Athletic Conference golf championships at Broken Arrow, Okla.

Shintani shot 41-36 at the Forest Ridge Country Club.

Hawaii was in third place eight strokes behind TCU and Tulsa. The Horned Frogs and Golden Hurricane were tied for first at 19-over 307.

TCU's Angela Stanford shot the day's best round and led by two strokes at 39-33--72.

Trojans-Waves in semi

USC, coming off its three-game sweep of Hawaii on Saturday, meets host Pepperdine on Thursday in a semifinal match of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men's volleyball playoffs.

Loyola Marymount, which upset top-seeded Long Beach State, plays UCLA in the other semifinal, also on Thursday.

Garcia's quest on hold

The only thing that could stop Hawaiian surfer Sunny Garcia at this week's Rip Curl Pro in Australia was the lack of waves.

The ASP contest at Bells Beach, Victoria, was postponed today after hours of deliberation and a practice session enjoyed by the quarterfinalists still remaining in contention for this year's title.

Contest organizers, and the eight surfers left, were greeted with clean, 1-metre conditions at Bells Beach today, but because of a decreasing swell the decision was made to postpone the surfing action.

More than likely, the Rip Curl Pro will utilize its mobile element and take to Victoria's Great Ocean road tomorrow morning, en-route for either the waves of Johanna, or Gibson Steps.

Garcia will face local favorite Luke Hitchings of Australia in the first quarterfinal heat.
