Vulcans in softballThe conference-leading Silverswords (22-17, 12-4) have now won six in a row, all complete game by Marquez. The Vulcans are 22-20 and 8-8 heading into today's 2 p.m doubleheader with Chaminade.
In the opener, Marquez shut out UHH on four hits. Anu Kekauoha's three-run homer in the top of the sixth proved to be the difference.
Marquez (20-8) become the first 20-game winner in school history with her five-hitter in the second game. The only run she allowed was unearned.
HPU honors athletes
Susie Schoales, Eric Bentley and Filip Meijer were honored as Hawaii Pacific's 1999-00 Scholar-Athletes of the Year at the school's annual awards banquet last week.Schoales, a senior pitcher is a four-year starter for the 16th-ranked Sea Warriors softball team. She has a 3.37 cumulative grade point average, has earned Academic All-America honors and also holds 11 school pitching records.
Bentley and Meijer were co-winners of the Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year award.
Bentley, a senior pitcher on the baseball team, has a 3.75 cumulative GPA, tied the HPU record for wins in a season last year and broke the school record for strikeouts in a season.
Meijer is the senior captain of the No. 2-ranked Sea Warriors tennis team. He carries a 4.0 cumulative GPA.
