Wastewater Plant spill contained at the site

A spill at the Sand Island Wastewater Treatment Plant Saturday was contained at the facility and all the affected area has been disinfected, according to a city spokesperson.

A pipefitting to a storage tank disconnected about 2:20 p.m., causing about 65,000 gallons of sludge and waste water to leak out. The spill was brought under control in about an hour.

About 1,500 gallons of sludge and waste water entered a storm drain, but the effluent was removed before it reached Honolulu Harbor.

Project aims to reduce isle teen pregnancies

Puppets and teen parents are involved in a program to prevent unplanned teen pregnancies, starting with fifth- and sixth-graders.

The Teen Intervention Program is funded with a $115,000 grant from the Victoria A. and Bradley L. Geist Foundation to Kapiolani Medical Center For Women & Children.

The demonstration project -- called Parent and Child Education -- encourages children to talk and learn about changes occurring during puberty in a nonthreatening classroom atmosphere. It will be conducted in 20 Oahu schools.

A puppet show is followed by a discussion and question-and-answer period presented by teen parents and an educator.

Man critically wounded; suspect may be relative

A 25-year-old man was critically wounded in a shooting early yesterday morning fronting 214 Sand Island Access Road.

Queen's Hospital is not releasing any updated information on the victim's condition at the request of police.

The suspect, believed to be related to the victim, fled the scene in a sports utility vehicle and is still at large, police said.

Police responding to the scene at 1:05 a.m. yesterday said they found the victim lying on his back with wounds to his abdomen.

Man gives up after threat to blow up Sand Isle bridge

A 54-year-old man threatening to blow up the Sand Island bridge surrendered to police patrol officers yesterday after a brief standoff.

The man allegedly rigged a flare to a 20-pound propane gas tank on the bridge. Special Services Division officers were called out but the man surrendered at 1:13 a.m. before they arrived, police said.

The man reportedly was upset at being harassed by a group at the park, police said.

Body of visiting hiker found at Mokuleia

The body of a 50-year-old hiker, missing since Saturday, was found at the base of a waterfall in Mokuleia by a fire rescue team shortly before 8 a.m. yesterday.

The Iowa man and his 13-year-old son drove out to Dillingham Airfield. The man hiked up the Kealia Trail, while his son biked up to Peacock Flats. The 13-year-old waited for his father, who never showed up.

The Fire Department was notified at 5:11 p.m. Saturday and searched until dark with a ground crew and a rescue helicopter. The search resumed at 6:12 a.m. by air along the Kealia Trail. The body was spotted in Keekee Gulch and was airlifted to Dillingham Airfield.

The man's family -- his wife and two sons, 16 and 13, were present.

Rescuers noted severe trauma to the man's head and upper body, which may indicate he fell from the top of the waterfall 250 to 300 feet. Cause of death will be determined by the medical examiner.

"Keekee Gulch is well off the marked Kealia Trail," said Capt. Richard Soo, Honolulu Fire Department spokesman.

The victim's son told fire rescuers that they were not familiar with the islands.

Red Cross and Visitors Aloha Society of Hawaii were called to assist the family, which had been staying at Backpackers and Vacation Inns in Sunset Beach.

9 people hurt, 1 critically, in 5-car Nanakuli accident

An 8-year-old boy injured in a five-car collision Saturday night in Nanakuli remains in critical condition today at Queen's Hospital.

The boy was the most seriously injured of the nine people hurt in the 7 p.m. collision on Farrington Highway near Saint Rita Catholic church.

Traffic investigators say the chain of collisions started when a van struck a pickup truck, which was negotiating a turn, from behind. The impact sent the van into on-coming lanes where it collided with a sedan carrying the boy.

The sedan then veered off the highway and was broadsided by another pickup truck. The first pickup truck also veered off the road and was broadsided by another vehicle.
