Vulcans, take
over WAC leadHILO -- Shawn Hannah pitched 17th-ranked Fresno State into first place in the Western Athletic Conference last night.
The 6-foot-3 senior right-hander limited the University of Hawaii-Hilo Vulcans to five hits in an 8-0 victory at Francis Wong Stadium. It was Hannah's first career shutout.
The Bulldogs moved a game ahead of San Jose State, a 7-5 loser to Texas Christian yesterday.
Fresno State (32-11 overall, 14-6 WAC) took a 1-0 lead in the second. Brandon Gemoll doubled, took third on Nick Garcia's singled and scored on Mike Bowlin's sacrifice fly.
Anthony Acevedo then hit a two-run homer in the third inning.
The Bulldogs widened their lead in the seventh on Josh Labandeira's RBI single and Acevedo's sacrifice fly.
Hilo ace, left-hander Thomas Ford, allowed just six hits in eight innings, but walked five.
The Bulldogs scored three more runs in the ninth off UHH reliever Robert Shimabuku.
Brandon Chaves and Keola Park each had two hits for the Vulcans (14-28 overall, 5-18 WAC).
The series ends today with a 1 p.m. at Simmons Field in Kona.
