Coolen gains 400th

Wahine victoryPORTLAND, Ore. - University of Hawaii seniors Melissa McGie and Joyce Lum combined to go 7-for-9 in the first game against Portland State yesterday, helping the Wahine to a 10-5 victory at Erv Lind Stadium.
It was UH coach Bob Coolen's 400th career collegiate coaching win. Coolen, who also coached in Massachusetts, is 328-212-1 in eight-plus seasons with the Wahine.
The Vikings came back with an 8-7 victory in the second game for a split of the Western Athletic Conference doubleheader.
In the opener, McGie went 4-for-5, with a homer and four RBIs. Lum went 3-for-4, with a double and a pair of RBIs.
Hawaii (18-21, 4-6) and Portland State (19-27, 5-7) were scheduled for another doubleheader today.
Wahine fall to Aggies
The No. 8 University of Hawaii women's water polo team lost to No. 11 UC Davis, 9-6, on the first day of the national qualification tournament at the Spieker Aquatics Complex at Berkeley, Calif.The Aggies held a slim 3-2 lead after the first quarter, but broke the match open with a 4-1 run in the second and third quarters. Lisa De Rossi and Amy Morrow led the Wahine attack with two goals each.
Hawaii (18-13) will face San Jose State today and must defeat the Spartans to be assured one of the four automatic bids to the Collegiate National Championships May 5-7 in Indiana. If Hawaii loses, it will play the loser of the UC Davis-Pacific match with a possible at-large bid at stake.
UH coaches at QB Club
University of Hawaii football defensive coordinator Kevin Lempa and quarterback coach Dan Morrison will be guest speakers at the weekly meeting of the Honolulu Quarterback Club Monday at noon at the Pagoda Restaurant.Kamehameha assistant golf coach Ken Kau will also be a featured speaker. He will discuss the upcoming Hawaii High School Athletic Association/David Ishii Boys and Girls State Golf Championships.
Golf conference Monday
Mark Rolfing of NBC Sports will be one of the key speakers at Monday's Aloha Section PGA Hawaii State Golf Conference Hall of Fame Luncheon at the Hawaii Prince Hotel.Rolfing, Barrett Melvin and the late Billy Arakawa are the three inductees into the Hall of Fame this year.
The conference begins at 9 a.m. Lunch is at 11:30 a.m.
Komine wins again
Former Kalani High star Shane Komine recorded his seventh double-figure strikeout performance of the season last night to help Nebraska to a 16-2 win over Texas A&M in a Big 12 baseball game.The sophomore struck out 11 in picking up his fifth complete-game victory, allowing two runs on five hits. Komine has struck out 114 batters in 79 innings and is nine strikeouts away from breaking Nebraska's single-season record of 123 set by Troy Brohawn in 1993.
Uso leaves Stanford
Stanford University wide receiver Tafiti Uso quit the team yesterday for unknown reasons.Had he remained with the Cardinal, the 1997 graduate of Punahou School would have been a senior. If he wants to transfer to another Division I school, the Star-Bulletin's 1996 offensive player of the year has a redshirt year available to him.
Last season, Uso caught 13 passes for 176 yards and no touchdowns. He only had receptions in eight of Stanford's 12 games that culminated with a loss to Wisconsin in the 1999 Rose Bowl.
