Murphy rolls
into the 50s

It was packed at Murphy's Thursday as owner Don Murphy and his wife, Marion, greeted friends on his 50th birthday. The gang from O'Toole's across the street had a narrow crosswalk of tape across Nuuanu Avenue and theyMug shot rolled in an antique wheelchair with two IVs filled with alcoholic beverages as a gift. As for rolling into the 50s, Murphy said, "I'm trying not to think about it. You only get to cross the stage once." Murphy is well known for his support of UH athletics. Football coach June Jones and basketball coach Riley Wallace heaped praise on him. "There is nobody in the world like Murphy," Jones said. "I've lived in about 20 cities and there is nobody with a bigger heart. When they made him, they broke the mold." Wallace said that in all the years he's been involved in Hawaii sports, he's "never met anyone better than Murphy. I think he's in a class of his own. What he does and says is straight from the heart." Magician-bartender Bobby Acoba performed. He was a gift from Ray Sweeney and Dave Lyman, who was with his fairly recent bride, Lori. For a chef who many believe has the best restaurant in town, Alan Wong is a humble guy. We keep striving to be better to please the customers. We feed on the energies." Among the many congratulating Alan was Sen. Dan Akaka, who also sang "Hawaiian Lullaby" as his son, Daniel Jr., played guitar. Junior's wife, Anna, danced hula. More music was by Mahiehie - Sam Kaina, Mark Tang and Helene Woodward. Sunday was also the birthday of Wong's office boss, Mona Taga. "She tells me what to do," said Wong's G.M. Charley Yoshida ...

Wegman earns a bow-wow

dogs at the bark park are howling over the video art exhibition at The Contemporary Museum featuring William Wegman's cool canines through June 11.
