Donna Kahakui will begin her third marine environment awareness canoe paddling trek tonight when she starts off on a 113-mile course around Oahu.

In conjunction with Earth Day weekend, Kahakui will launch her solo canoe from the Hilton Hawaiian Village beach at 7 p.m.

Her "Adventure Aloha 2000'' trek will include stops at Pokai Bay, Kahana Bay and Maunalua Bay, where marine protection projects are underway.

She is expected to complete the trip sometime Sunday afternoon, finishing at the Hilton Hawaii Village.

"This is symbolic of the relationship between the land and the sea,'' said Kahakui. "As I am making my water journey, project participants on the land will be learning about how what we do on the land directly impacts the ocean.''

Kahakui was to be honored by the Hawaii Ecotourism Association at a luncheon today at the Hale Koa Hotel.
