Tedeschi Winery
Maui wines will be available for tasting at
The Ulupalakua Thing! April 29.

Taste all that Maui
has to offer

It's called a trade show, but that's a rather sterile label for an event where all manner of Hawaii-made foods are laid out for the tasting.

The Maui Agricultural Trade Show and Sampling -- better known by its nickname, The Ulupalakua Thing! -- takes place noon to 4 p.m. April 29 at Ulupalakua Ranch and Tedeschi Winery. Admission is a mere $10, which gives you access to the sampling tables offering coffees, candies, ranch beef, dressings, fresh produce, condiments and more from 100 local businesses.

The afternoon's activities include cooking demonstrations by Maui chefs, as well as an appearance by Kristine Snyder, the Maui resident who was a winner in this year's Pillsbury Bake-Off.

And, there's an Ultimate Picnic Basket Competition in which professional chefs create themed lunch baskets. The baskets will be auctioned off to benefit the Maui Community College Food Service program. Call (808) 878-6058.

Public vote saves pineapple LifeSavers

Statistics can lie, or at least mislead, the LifeSavers Co. has found.

Company research showed pineapple was the least favorite flavor in the classic five-flavor roll introduced in 1935, so LifeSavers offered consumers a chance to vote for a replacement flavor. The choices were strawberry or watermelon, but after 1 million responses were tallied, the overwhelming response: Hands off our pineapple!

Votes were tallied via phone and Internet. The results were 54 percent for keeping pineapple, 25 percent for watermelon and 21 percent for strawberry.

The LifeSavers Co. has now declared pineapple "the classic flavor gold standard of all time." In celebration, it is giving away up to $4,000 in gold. LifeSaver buyers who find a bag or roll of candy bearing a winners' certificate can trade it in for the package's weight in gold. For contest details call (888) 266-3828.
