The U.S. men's and women's basketball teams will have a stopover at the University of Hawaii athletic complex this summer, Teri Wilhelm Chang, assistant athletics director for facilities and events, has confirmed. Olympic basketball
teams coming to OahuThe teams will be at the Manoa campus from Aug. 28 until Sept. 3, according to Chang. They will use the Stan Sheriff Center for training and a pair of exhibitions.
The men will hold an exhibition game Sept. 2 and the women will play the following day.
Early basketball rounds for the Olympics start Sept. 16 for women and Sept. 17 for men.
The men's team includes Vince Carter, Ray Allen, Vin Baker, Tim Duncan, Kevin Garnett, Tim Hardaway, Grant Hill, Allan Houston, Jason Kidd, Alonzo Mourning, Gary Payton and Steve Smith.
The women's team features Ruthie Bolton-Holifield, Dawn Staley, Lisa Leslie, Chamique Holdsclaw, Natalie Williams and Nikki McCray.
HPU loses in semifinals
The Hawaii Pacific University softball team made it to the semifinals of the 2000 Mountain Dew Classic where it lost to host Cal State Bakersfield, 3-0, yesterday.After losing two games Friday, HPU came back with three wins Saturday and an early 5-1 win over Chico State yesterday. In the win over Chico State, Susie Schoales pitched a complete-game two-hitter and Ho'o Naki bashed an RBI triple.
Lauren Okamoto and Lyrissa Sagawa both hit a triple against Bakersfield.
The University of Hawaii-Hilo split a pair of games yesterday, beating Cal State Dominguez Hills, 6-1, before losing to UC Riverside, 2-0, in the consolation final.
Two HPU players, Naki and Holly Garcia, and one Hawaii-Hilo player,Melanie Hipwell, were chosen to the all-tournament team.
Macdonald places third
Eri Macdonald, the former Punahou track star, placed third in her section in the 800-meter run for the University of Oregon at the Mt. San Antonio College (Calif.) Relays on Saturday.
Bowl-a-thon deadline
Junior Achievement of Hawaii will hold its annual bowl-a-thon tournament, the "Millennium Thunder Bowl" May 6 at the Hickam Air Force Base Bowling Center.The registration deadline is Friday, April 21. The fee is $100 per team, and proceeds will benefit Junior Achievement's business and economic education programs.
