Along with the names of sponsors in ads for Wayne Newton's concert with the Honolulu Pops last Saturday at the Waikiki Shell were the words "Merry Christmas Dee!" That's because Dee Levy's husband, Bob, Honolulu Symphony board chair, helped sponsor the show as a present for his wife, an ultra-Newton fan. Dee is chairing the Honolulu Symphony Ball, May 13, at Sheraton Waikiki. "She's a Wayne Newton Freak," Bob said. "Thirty years ago he gave her a scarf and she still has it." At the end of the show, Dee gave Newton a lei and he gave her roses and a kiss. Said Dee: "Words can't explain how it feels to be kissed by Wayne Newton. Varooom! I'd be crying now if we weren't going to take him to dinner at Sarento's." Wayne may be a good kisser but his pronunciation needs work. He called our guv Sigh-a-tano and Jimmy Borges "Bor-guess." How he got Apaka as in Jeff Apaka right I'll never know ... Wayne was Dees

DeLima takes the cake
"I speak Japanese," said Frank DeLima loudly in answer to emcee Chuck Furuya's question at L'Uraku's fourth anniversary party last weekend. Frank then cut loose with some wild sounding Japanese words to L'Uraku owner Chikara Yanagiya and his daughter, Mioko, who had just been introduced. Then Frank burst into a Japanese song, which he totally destroyed. He finished leading the laughing crowd in the banzai toast. When Frank was pau, co-emcee Emme Tomimbang asked the owner, "Are we still friends?" Frank was a big hit along with the music of Pure Heart, joined by B.B. Shawn and samples of chef Hiroshi Fukui's specialties ... Tomimbang's "Millennium Woman" special on KGMB Thursday and April 23 features Vicky Cayetano, Halekulani G.M. Pat Tam, HAL pilot Zoe Ann Roach and Napua Thatcher, a former homeless drug addict reclaiming her life ...
