Leahey awardTakaki, the chairman and CEO of Island Movers, Inc., is the 17th honoree since the award began in 1988. Takaki created Pacific Region Baseball, Inc., a non-profit organization that operates the Hawaii Island Movers summer baseball team.
The award was established to perpetuate the memory of Chuck Leahey who donated his time and energy to UH baseball and the community.
Komine pitcher of week
Kalani graduate Shane Komine has been named Big 12 Pitcher of the Week for the second time this season.The Nebraska sophomore was cited for his performance against Kansas last weekend.
Komine tied a Cornhuskers' record by striking out 17 batters in a 9-3 victory over the Jayhawks on Saturday.
FutureBrawl at Arena
Japan's Rumina Sato makes his American debut tomorrow when he faces Yves Edwards of Texas in the extreme fighting main bout of FutureBrawl 2000 at Blaisdell Arena at 7:30 p.m.Hawaii's Ronald "Machine Gun'' Jhun goes against World Shooto light heavyweight champion Eric Paulson of Los Angeles in a semi-main event. There is also an eight-bout undercard. Tickets range in price from $25-$50.
Auto championship set
The Tax Relief 2000 championship auto racing event will be held tomorrow at Hawaii Motor Speedway's quarter-mile dirt oval track. Gates open at 5 p.m. with racing at 7 p.m.
Wahine golfers travel
The University of Hawaii Wahine golf team will play in the Peg Bernard California Collegiate at the Stanford Golf Course tomorrow and Sunday.Wahine golfers Linda Applebad, Bobbie Arakawa, Angie Park, Melissa Shintani and Desiree Tang will compete.
