Star-BulletinThe Honolulu Symphony's 2000-2001 Pops season will feature Manhattan Transfer, Michael McDonald and Toni Tennille, as well as a return visit by Grammy Award-winning jazz pianist Diana Krall.
Matt Catingub conducts the Pops orchestra season -- his third -- which begins in September.
"The success of our 1999-2000 Pops season has been phenomenal," Catingub said. "Our priority is to provide the highest quality entertainment possible."
The Pops season kicks off Sept. 15 and 16 with The Manhattan Transfer. Best known for four-part harmonies, the quartet has recorded 20 albums in 25 years, and has received 10 Grammy Awards.
This year, the group was nominated for its vocal collaboration "Going Away Party" with Asleep at the Wheel and Willie Nelson.
The orchestra's "Takin' it to the Pops" concert will feature Michael McDonald Oct. 13 and 14. McDonald has one of music's most recognized voices, heard on such songs as "What A Fool Believes," "Takin' It to the Streets" and "I Keep Forgettin'."
He worked with Steely Dan and the Doobie Brothers before pursuing a solo career, and the concert is his first performance with a symphony orchestra.
The Brothers Cazimero Christmas Concert ushers in the symphony's holiday season with three performances Dec. 14, 15 and 16.
The 2001 performances are:
Jan. 19 and 20 -- Local performers Hapa and Na Leo.Pops subscribers who renew subscriptions by Wednesday will receive a free ticket to the symphony's 2000 Bonus Concert, featuring the Bach B-minor Mass and 180 voices of the Schneidt Bach Choir, directed by Hanns-Martin Schneidt. Concert dates are April 30 and May 2.March 23 and 24 -- Toni Tennille, half of the '70s musical duo Captain and Tennille.
April 13 and 14 -- Diana Krall, in a debut of her new symphonic pops program orchestrated by Catingub.
May 11 and 12 -- Actor/singer Craig Schulman in "Broadway in Paradise."
Pops subscriptions include a seven-concert series on Fridays or Saturdays at 7:30 p.m., with prices set at $105, $140, $182, $224 and $315.
Single tickets for each Pops concert are $16.50, $22.50, $28.50, $36.50 and $50.

The Honolulu Symphony has hired an interim adviser to help assess the orchestra's needs during its continuing search for a replacement for executive director Michael Tiknis who resigned last month. Adviser hired to assist in director search
John Graham, president of the Florida-based Management Counsel to the Arts -- a consulting firm for arts management -- arrives here Sunday for a week of meetings with the symphony's senior management and orchestra committee.
Graham, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., was executive director of the Oregon Symphony and Florida Philharmonic, director of the Center for the Arts at Southern Methodist University, and development director for the Seattle Symphony.
Graham, who left the Florida Philharmonic two years ago to open his company, said he is not a candidate for executive director.
