Owls edge Vulcans

HOUSTON -- Marc Gwyn outdueled University of Hawaii-Hilo right-hander Kaholo Rickard to lead Rice to a 1-0 victory over the Vulcans in a Western Athletic Conference baseball game last night at Reckling Park.

Gwyn pitched a three-hit, complete game. He struck out nine and walked two.

Rickard gave up seven singles, struck out five and walked none in his own complete-game performance. He retired the last 17 men he faced.

Rice got its only run in the first inning. Brett Smith, Jesse Roman and Jason Gray led off the game with consecutive singles, with Gray getting the RBI.

The Vulcans (5-13, 14-23) end their mainland road trip with a three-game series at Texas Christian beginning Thursday.
