HPU's Woodard cited by PacWest

Hawaii Pacific sophomore Jennifer Woodard was named the Pacific West Conference's Pitcher of the Week yesterday.

Woodard, from Wilmington, Calif., led the 16th-ranked Sea Warriors to a doubleheader sweep of conference rival Brigham Young-Hawaii last week. She has now won eight straight games, including six consecutive shutouts.

In the first game against the Seasiders, Woodard tossed a two-hitter. She then picked up her second victory of the day in relief, but saw her streak of 48 straight scoreless innings snapped when BYUH scored against her in the seventh.

The 48 consecutive scoreless innings is sixth-best ever in NCAA Division II softball.

Hawaii's Bugarin in Nepal race

Hawaii will be represented at the prestigious Raid Gauloises adventure race for the first time ever.

Hawaii Kai resident Edward Bugarin, 50, will lead a five-member team through the Himalayan Mountains in a race made up of hiking, biking, white water rafting and swimming, repelling and hydroskiing.

The Raid Gauloises Expedition Competition starts in Nepal April 30, with 60 teams attempting to finish within the 10-day limit.

Bugarin's team also includes Jane Hall, who has led the Australian women to two straight Na Wahine O Ke Kai canoe victories.
